Humanities Initiative Annual International Symposium organized by AWL

Dates: 28-29th August 2025

Venue: IIIT-Delhi

ABOUT US

At the Humanities Initiative - housed in the Social Science and Humanities Department at IIIT-Delhi—we strive to combine multi-disciplinary perspectives, grounded in philosophy and critical thinking from a humanities perspective, to policy challenges emanating from the emergence of new technologies. Our goal is to grasp the rapid technological advances that are redrawing the contours of public interests which have driven significant changes in the economy and society, and our everyday lives. These “disruptive” effects of fast technological advancement create a policy, regulatory, and normative gap in society, where the latter often finds itself in the position of framing policies to 'catch up' with and adequately reflect such advancements. We offer teaching, consultancy and research services for effectively and equitably deploying technology, and aid policymaking needs to keep pace with the rapid infusion and development of technology and assess the ethical, social and environmental challenges that technology poses.

The Academic Writing Lab is an important constituent of IIIT Delhi and is housed in the writing lab within the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). We regularly host seminars, public talks and research related events. We aim to address the educational needs which are likely to emerge in the future with the ever increasing convergence of Computer Science with social systems resulting in an increasing role for the social sciences and the humanities in technology and business solutions.

Humanities Initiative Annual International Symposium- 2025

Based on the insights received at the 2024 Humanities Initiative (HI) collaborative roundtable discussion hosted at IIIT Delhi with distinguished faculty members and past participants, Academic Writing Lab (AWL) is happy to announce the theme of the 2025 symposium as "Digital Inequalities and the Question of Global South." Join us in shaping the discourse on digital transformation and equity in the Global South. Let's explore emerging inequalities and develop a collaborative intellectual foundation

Call for Paper/Panel Proposal

This Call for Papers (CFP) invites papers that highlight the complex nature of the digital divide, particularly in terms of the quality of internet usage. We welcome abstracts addressing any of the above themes or related areas.

Submissions may include original research, theoretical contributions, case studies, or critical analyses. Selected papers will be accepted for oral presentations in Graduate Students' Panels based on the thematic clusters (to be decided after the blind review process). Additionally, there will be specific panels on certain themes, including papers whose topics closely align with them.

We encourage creative approaches to investigating digital and social inequalities in the Global South. The need to address the crisis of digital inequality emerges from the anticipation that if these issues remain unaddressed, they may delay or even deter the progress toward realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
